St Mary's, Cheveley
Cheveley is first mentioned in 1085 in the Domesday Book. The present Church was built around 1260, and most of the building is 14th/15th century, including a fine Rood Screen. The dedication is believed to be unique. It is in cruciform shape, with a lovely modern nave altar fashioned from old pews. The unusual tower is square with an octagonal summit. The five bells, cast locally in Sudbury, were fixed in 1871 and, for safety reasons, are rung today by chiming. The church also has very good stained glass windows.
The church building is open every day, prayers for the village are said there daily, and you are welcome to come in and visit, enjoy the peace or use the prayer corner where you will find a collection of prayercards and candles to light.
